A Chocolate Almond Banana Smoothie Kind of Morning

We don't usually get to be together in the mornings. One of us has always worked much earlier than the other, I like to get up early on Saturdays to run, and Jacob gets up early Sunday to fulfill bishopric responsibilities for our church. Every once in a while, we're able to eek in a quick breakfast together before one or both of us have to run!

I'm kind of a cyclical eater when it comes to breakfast. I'll eat the same thing everyday for about 6 months, then change to something new, and inevitability go back to my favorites during my rotation. In high school, freshman year of college, and my 2nd year teaching I relied heavily on Carnation Breakfast Essentials powder to get me through. I love their ease of use (I'm always running late), the variety of flavors, and the fact there's 13 grams of protein in a serving- that's like a dream for your blood sugar to stay up all morning!

I'm recycling this favorite back into my life right now, I just grabbed a pack at Safeway last week, and I'm introducing Jacob to this former love too. But this time, I'm kicking it up a notch and getting creative and teaching my Vitamix how to court this delicious favorite to create a delicious smoothie love child.


Chocolate Almond Banana Breakfast Smoothie for 2:

2 packets Carnation Breakfast Essentials- milk or dark chocolate (dark is my favorite)
2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk or cow's milk
1.5 cups of ice
3-4 TBSP almond butter
2 bananas

Instructions:
Add milk, ice, almond butter, and bananas in a blender.

Mix well until banana and ice are pureed and texture is smooth.

Then pour in your Carnation Breakfast Essentials packs, and mix until fully incorporated.

Pour your smoothies into cups, and remember that every beverage tastes better when a cute straw is involved.
Applaud yourself- you just got over 20 grams of protein, a good amount of vitamins and minerals, and plenty of calcium in a delicious milkshake for breakfast. Seriously, I was full all morning and felt great!

  1. This looks so good! Do you think it would still be tasty if I swapped the almond butter for peanut butter? I haven't made the switch to almond butter yet...it's so dang expensive!
